The Vice Dean of the Division of Students' Affairs of Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. S.A. Oluwatosin, made it known that those who are agitating for the reinstatement of the university's students' union are of no pedigree.
He disclosed this at a public meeting organized on Wednesday with the purpose of educating students on security which featured the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Babatunde Oyatokun, members of security teams and hall wardens.
It should be recalled that this news outfit reported the suspension of the Students' Union, which was pronounced in November 2017 after the impeachment of the President, Edward Ibukun, and series of fights among union leaders.
Speaking about students' unionism, Dr. Oluwatosin reiterated that the union will be reinstated at the right time when the management deems it fit. He clarified that the current calibre of people that are campaigning for reinstatement are not people the management can trust with the union.
"The union will be reinstated at the right time. The same set of people that are campaigning for reinstatement of the union are the same set of people that caused the proscription. They are people of no pedigree and they can't be trusted with the union," he said.
He also spoke about absence of students' unionism in other universities.
"Go to LASU, go to UNILAG, they don't have a students' union. We want the union, I personally, believes in students' unionism but it should be with the right set of people," he said.
However, a part 1 student of political science, Ojoade Bolaji, came out and countered the Vice dean. Ojoade clarified that the Vice Dean committed a fallacy while taking about unionism.
"This programme was organized to talk about security but can we have a good security without a students' union? No! Sir, I'll like to remind you about July 10, 1999, we all know what happened. Last year, one of us was killed at the level of "New Buka" and you still think this is not the right time to talk about students' union. With all due respect, you're committing a fallacy, sir." Ojoade said.
Mr. Babatunde Oyatokun commented on Ojoade's statement and made some clarifications about what the vice dean said.
He said, "What the vice dean is saying is that you people are using the wrong tactics. Don't get it wrong, we all want the union, I want it. But the truth is you guys are not using the right process. If you people can get the security and the students' affairs department on your side, then students' unionism will be achieved."
" If you guys can write to either the division of students' affairs or our own department, I can help with the remaining ones. I will urge you guys to change the tactics you've been using."
The public meeting continues tomorrow at SUB car park, this time to educate Akintola hall's residents.
