(Opinion) Nigeria @ 58: Call to Independence.

 OladeleAdeola

So it's another year again, in fact, the 58th when Nigerians celebrate independence, freedom from colonialism. But the question remains the same over the years. Are we really free? What has changed since 58 years ago? Where exactly is Nigeria heading to? Was independence actually the best the nationalists that initiated and sacrificed for the fight had to opt for? Well, maybe it was what they thought will be the best for Nigerians.

Before 1960, we were bound in the chains of colonialism from the white who preached good intentions in disguise of the evil they have in heart. They exploited the lands flowing with milk and honey, manipulated the leaders and followers have no choice than to succumb. They committed one of the greatest crime to humanity- enslaved us.

Nationalists rose to change the story to make us independent and stand firm on our own. They fought relentlessly and even sacrificed lives to make us stand out as the  giant of Africa. The fight was not in vain, they won.

But was it really a fight that worth it does it really end dependency?
Are we truly in the state of independence now?
We still have issues we are battling.

We are still unsecured like we were before 1960. The state of youth employment is nothing to write home about, insecurity remains the flimsy oil in our white garment. Democracy is more or less in disaster, its a bondage leaders trapped citizens in. Poverty dwells with citizen as if its part of life style.

The most embarrassing is leadership, election claimed to be free and fair is the opposite. The media itself is not independent.

Fellow Nigerians  we are the cause of our pain and only we can profer solution to it as well.

I think we still have a long way to go before we reach where independence actually resides. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. We need to take the bold step and make full commitment and rise to our civic responsibilities.

Let's elect leaders with vision, mission and not just the one that satisfy our pocket as at the moment. We also need to  be able to stand up to responsibility and be just .

Arise o compatriot,  Nigeria's call obey.
The labour of our heroes past shall not be in vain.
Let's serve with heart and might so that our nation will be bound in freedom.  Peace and unity.
